Link Redirect Tracer

Trace HTTP redirect chains step-by-step, uncover hidden affiliate tags, verify canonical routing, and diagnose circular redirect loops.

Link Redirect Tracer

Follow the full, accurate path of a shortened or redirected URL to its final destination.

This tool is connected to our HREKOV VPS server to perform the server-side tracing API and ensure accurate redirect following. We utilize a Python and FastAPI backend to fetch and process domain information in real-time.

Technical Architecture: Reverse-Engineering HTTP Redirect Tracing

Auditing redirect chains is critical for technical SEO and web security. Unintentional redirect chains dilute PageRank, inflate Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), increase Time to First Byte (TTFB), and obscure malicious landing destinations behind URL shorteners.

1. Headless HTTP Hop Traversal & Loop Detection

Unlike standard web browsers that automatically follow Location response headers and expose only the final destination in window.location, the redirect tracing service audits each network hop sequentially using a headless HTTP client:

const API_URL = 'https://dns.hrekov.com/api/trace/redirect';

async function traceRedirectChain(targetUrl: string) {
// Ensure protocol prefix
let normalizedUrl = targetUrl.trim();
if (!/^https?:\/\//i.test(normalizedUrl)) {
normalizedUrl = `https://${normalizedUrl}`;
}

const response = await fetch(`${API_URL}?url=${encodeURIComponent(normalizedUrl)}`);
const data = await response.json();

// data contains array of hops: [{ url, status, latency_ms, headers }]
return data;
}

On the backend, request loops are trapped by maintaining a visited URL set. If any intermediary URL matches a previously visited URL in the active chain, execution terminates immediately with a REDIRECT_LOOP_DETECTED warning, avoiding server hang states.

2. HTTP Redirection Standards (RFC 9110)

The tracer distinguishes between legacy and modern redirection status codes defined in RFC 9110:

  • 301 Moved Permanently: Search engines transfer link equity (PageRank) to the target URL. Browsers aggressively cache 301 responses.
  • 302 Found: Temporary redirect. Browsers may change the request method from POST to GET for the redirected request.
  • 307 Temporary Redirect: Guarantees that the HTTP request method (e.g. POST, PUT) and payload body are repeated identically on the new endpoint.
  • 308 Permanent Redirect: Permanent equivalent of 307; passes link equity while strictly preserving original HTTP request methods without method mutation.

3. Programmatic API Reference & Automation

Integrate redirect tracing into CI/CD link checkers, site migration crawlers, or affiliate auditing scripts:

# Trace a shortened URL via cURL
curl -s "https://dns.hrekov.com/api/trace/redirect?url=https://bit.ly/google-search"

JSON Response Schema

Client-Side Security & Zero-Server Data Isolation

  • Safe Unmasking: Allows inspecting shortened links (t.co, bit.ly, tinyurl.com) without executing client-side tracking scripts, drive-by malware payloads, or third-party cookies on your local machine.
  • No Query Logging: Target URLs traced through the tool are not written to persistent search logs or shared with advertising networks.
  • Timeout Protection: External fetch requests are bounded by strict 5-second socket timeouts to prevent denial-of-service hanging on slow upstream servers.
