EPUB to PDF Converter
Convert DRM-free EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 ebooks into readable A4 PDF files directly in your browser with zero file uploads.
Technical Architecture: Reverse-Engineering In-Browser EPUB Extraction
An .epub file is a standardized ZIP container adhering to IDPF / W3C Open Container Format (OCF) specifications. This utility parses container manifests, resolves internal image resources into Base64 data URIs, and formats chapter HTML into paginated PDF layouts.
1. OCF Package Manifest & Spine Resolution
The conversion pipeline unzips the ebook archive in memory and locates the Open Packaging Format (.opf) file defining the reading order:
import JSZip from 'jszip';
async function parseEpubSpine(epubFile: File) {
const zip = await JSZip.loadAsync(epubFile);
// 1. Read container.xml to find the rootfile path
const containerXml = await zip.file('META-INF/container.xml')?.async('text');
const rootfilePath = extractRootfilePath(containerXml);
// 2. Parse content.opf to extract the spine sequence and manifest items
const opfText = await zip.file(rootfilePath)?.async('text');
const { manifest, spine } = parseOpfManifestAndSpine(opfText);
// 3. Extract and stitch HTML chapters in linear reading order
const chaptersHtml: string[] = [];
for (const itemId of spine) {
const itemHref = manifest[itemId];
const chapterContent = await zip.file(itemHref)?.async('text');
chaptersHtml.push(resolveRelativeAssets(chapterContent, zip));
}
return chaptersHtml.join('<div class="page-break"></div>');
}
2. Embedded Resource Resolution & ISO A4 Pagination
Because raw EPUB chapters reference internal relative asset paths (e.g. ../images/cover.jpg), the engine resolves all images and stylesheets into self-contained Base64 data URIs before handing the unified DOM structure to the pagination renderer. Automatic CSS page-break rules prevent chapter headers from becoming orphaned at page bottoms.
EPUB Standard Specification Matrix
| Feature | EPUB 2 Specification | EPUB 3 Specification | In-Browser Conversion Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark-up Language | XHTML 1.1 | HTML5 | Full support |
| Typography Styling | CSS 2.1 | CSS3 (Flexbox, Media Queries) | Full support |
| Vector Graphics | Embedded SVG | Inline SVG + Canvas | Full vector rendering |
| Encrypted DRM | Adobe ACS4 DRM | Vendor-locked proprietary | DRM-free only (unencrypted) |
Client-Side Security & Zero-Server Data Isolation
- 100% In-Memory Conversion: Entire books are uncompressed, styled, and rendered inside your browser tab's RAM. Ebook manuscripts, unpublished drafts, and reading records are never transmitted across the network.
- No File Size Egress Restrictions: Because data stays local, conversion throughput is bounded only by your computer's RAM.
- Zero Storage Footprint: Unzipped ebook HTML and temporary canvas buffers are wiped when the browser tab is closed.
